Humperdink’s Castle – Visiting Haddon Hall

From Christina’s Perspective:

Hope you enjoyed our blog post about “Having Fun Stormin’ The Castle” where we visited some of the movie set locations from our favorite movie, “The Princess Bride”. I thought I would share some more of the beautiful photos from Haddon Hall (even though they weren’t featured in the movie) But some of you may recognize some of the rooms from other movies that have used Haddon Hall as a filming location:

1994 Jane Eyre – film featuring Charlotte Gainsbourg and William Hurt
1998 Elizabeth – film featuring Cate Blanchett, Geoffrey Rush and Joseph Fiennes
2004 Pride and Prejudice – film featuring Keira Knightley
2006 The Other Boleyn Girl – film featuring Scarlett Johansson and Natalie Portman
2010 Jane Eyre – film featuring Dame Judi Dench, Mia Wasikowska and Michael Fassbender

Notice the “gargoyles” at the top are all different characters…..you will see more in the main courtyard.

Here is a close up of one of the characters……each one was different around the entire castle.

The main drawing room was impressive with it’s beautiful woodwork and Christmas finery.

I loved the little quotes they had set up throughout the castle….most were from Shakespeare.

The salon was set up for an intimate wedding later that afternoon……

The waves in the leaded glass were beautiful…it looks like the windows have melted and changed shape over the centuries.

The upstairs dining room was all set for the wedding reception dinner……

…..Just beautiful!

Notice the amazing ceiling detail in the long ballroom…..the day we visited, they were having a chamber music choir performance and the acoustics were incredible!

There was so much detail on every surface, from the wood paneling, to the leaded windows, to the carved ceiling…..simply stunning!

The crest on the window is dated 1589…..

The library was decorated to celebrate William Shakespeare……and I LOVED the book tree!

Notice the chapel window at the end of the castle…..we will visit there after our walk through the impressive gardens.

I found this cool old door in the back corner of the garden and I just had to take a picture (I am just a little obsessed with door photos)

Inside the chapel…..the light filtering through the leaded glass windows filled the room with such beautiful light! Notice the carved wooden panel behind the altar.

There are just fragments of the original painted walls, but you can just imagine how impressive this chapel would be with every surface painted in these beautiful patterns.

A beautiful castle! Your photos have captured the lovely intimacy of an old structure. And the book tree…this is a first! Looks like a great visit.

  2. Stunning photos. Your photographic skills continue to improve. Especially love the door to the Secret Garden (You knew I would).
